Ahead of the FundForum USA conference in October 2013, speaker Greg Valliere of POTOMAC RESEARCH GROUP reveals a few tasters of what he will be addressing at this year’s event as the FundForum USA ‘Washington Insider’:

1) The pace of Federal Reserve tapering:

There are several factors — inflation, the jobless rate, global economic growth, etc. — that will determine the pace of Fed action this fall. One thing is certain: Ben Bernanke and his replacement will stay accommodative for as far as the eye can see.

2) The astonishing decline of the U.S. budget deficit:

This is the least appreciated story in Washington. With virtually no new spending — and actual spending reductions — combined with solid receipt growth, the deficit is falling dramatically — and a surplus is not out of the question within two or three years.

3) Still another contentious budget issue:

Congress has to extend the debt ceiling late this year, and while it probably will occur, Republicans will seek even more fiscal restraint. The budget “sequester” may continue into 2014, a negative for the Pentagon and other agencies, but still another reason to expect a dramatic decline in the budget deficit.

4) Congress considering tax reform:

The key tax committees in Congress are preparing to move legislation that would radically reform the tax code for corporations and individuals. Many cherished tax deductions — accelerated depreciation, the mortgage tax break, charitable deductions, etc. — could be jeopardized.

5) The unique political climate:

Republicans are poised to retain control of the House next year and gain several seats in the Senate, but they face some major obstacles as the 2016 presidential election approaches. Will Hillary Clinton be the next president?

6) The regulatory and legislative outlook:

We’ll quickly look at the regulations and legislation that will have a wide impact on key industries, including health care, defense, financial services and energy.
